For Divergent, Summit’s hit YA adaptation starring Shailene Woodley, the filmmakers were tasked with turning Chicago into a futuristic dystopian society. A new bonus featurette that will be included on the upcoming Blu-ray edition of the film — introduced here exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter — reveals how they did it.
The film, set in postapocalyptic Chicago, gave director Neil Burger a challenge when it came to creating a believable setting. The featurette will give fans an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at how the director and filmmakers transformed the city for the adaptation of Veronica Roth‘s best-selling novel.

The featurette allows viewers to see how the city was changed to create a realistic, immersive background for the film’s futuristic yet worn-down feel. Everything from bus stops to street signs were painted out of the image, while turbines and signs of damage were added.

“Divergent visually is extremely compelling because it’s this new world and it’s full of new experiences and new walls to sort of explore,” says Woodley in the new clip.
The first film of the series opened in March 2014 and grossed more than $267 million worldwide. The second film in the franchise, Insurgent, is set to come out in 2015, while the third book of the series, Allegiant, will be split into two parts with the first opening in 2016.
Divergent will be released on Digital HD on July 22 and Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 5.
