Warner Bros. has acquired Philip Reeve‘s upcoming children’s book Railhead, with Doug Liman in negotiations to direct.
Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan will produce the adaptation via Di Novi Pictures.
The novel is set in a futuristic world where trains run through space via portals. The main character is a petty thief hired to steal an object that happens to be more important than he was led to believe, setting off an adventure that could change the course of the galaxy.

Slated to hit stores in Fall 2015 via Oxford University Press, the story is said to be packed with interesting characters — human and otherwise.
Reeve has shown a love for steampunk sci-fi and unusual characters with his Mortal Engines and Larklight books series. The latter was picked up by Warners in 2006 and also has Di Novi Pictures producing the project, which is still in development.
Railhead keeps Warners in business with Liman, the director of Mr & Mrs. Smith and The Bourne Identity, who made the sci-fi actioner Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, for the studio. Tomorrow opens June 6.
Di Novi and Greenspan are currently in production on The Best of Me, the adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel that stars Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden.
Reeve was repped by CAA in the deal. He is also repped by Philippa Milnes-Smith of Lucas Alexander Whitley in the UK.
Chantal Nong is overseeing for the studio.
