SAN DIEGO-

A wildfire whipped by Santa Ana winds has blackened hundreds of acres and prompted evacuations in neighborhoods from Rancho Bernardo to Fairbanks Ranch.

The fire broke out at about 10:40 a.m. in brush south of Camino San Bernardo west of Del Norte High School.

By late Tuesday afternoon, the fire had spread 700 acres.

No structures are immediately threatened, but the fire is being spread by moderate winds.

The fire quickly spread to about six acres, but the wind was pushing it west toward land that had been cleared for construction.

Dozens of fire engines were deployed to protect homes in a neighborhood immediately east of the fire.

Helicopters and Cal Fire air tankers were dropping water and fire retardant on the flames.
