Following the launch of Coffin Hill and Hinterkind and the announcement of Bodies and Names, DC Entertainment‘s Vertigo continues to roll out series centered around female leads — sadly, a rarity in mainstream comics — with the announcement Tuesday of The Kitchen, an 8-issue crime drama.
“The short sell, when the writer talked to me, was ‘It’s Goodfella meets Mob Wives,” editor Will Dennis said on the DC All Access web series. Set in the 1970s, it follows a group of women who take over the Irish Mob running Hell’s Kitchen when their husbands are sent to prison.

“They […] get a real taste for the money and the lifestyle and all this stuff,” Dennis explained, “and then it becomes this conflict when their husbands get out of jail: Are they going to give up all this racket they’ve taken over, or aren’t they?”
The series is written by British writer Ollie Masters, with art by Ming Doyle and colors by Jordie Bellaire. Covers for the series are by Becky Cloonan, who is also co-writing the new Gotham Academy series announced by DC on Monday. “We have these really, strong, interesting, talented women creators working on this with Ollie, which seems to make sense given the series,” Dennis said.
The Kitchen launches this November.
