Universal has picked up Berliner, an action spy thriller from F. Scott Frazier for Chris Morgan to produce.
Chris Cowles will also produce while Chris Fenton executive produces.
The script is set in 1961 and centers on an agent from the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to today’s CIA) who is tracking an assassin targeting Americans.
The script was sought after by several companies, including Studio Canal, which had producer Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman vying. Sources say the deal was preemtive in nature with the sale price being $400,000 against $750,000.
Frazier is known for his action specs, among them Line of Sight, set up at Warners with Mike McCoy (Act of Valor) attached to direct. He also has Day One, a sci-fi thriller housed at Universal that first teamed him with Morgan.
Morgan, who is based at Universal and is the writer behind the Fast & Furious franchise, is developing the studio’s monsters universe with Alex Kurtzman.
Ainsley Davies will oversee development for Chris Morgan Productions. Universal’s executive vice president of production Jon Mone and director of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for the studio.
Frazier is repped by CAA and DMG Entertainment.
