Fans who couldn’t wait to drive the Batmobile in Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Knight got some bad news Tuesday, when it was revealed that the release date of the game has been pushed out from this fall to some as-yet-undetermined date in 2015.
Explaining the reason for the delay to Gamespot, Rocksteady Studios marketing manager Guy Perkins said that it was simply a matter of ensuring that the game would be up to the desired standard. “We feel that we have an absolutely awesome game in the works, and we want to make it as great as it possibly can be,” he explained. “We just need more time to do that.”

Perkins also explained Rocksteady’s decision to skip Arkham Knight releases for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, saying that older hardware couldn’t handle the game’s needs. “The Batmobile is one thing we just couldn’t do on previous gen. It’s not just a case of having a car, it’s a case of building a city where the car feels at home,” he said. “Gotham City is five times larger than the game world of Arkham City. And by virtue of having a bigger city, you need more memory and more horsepower to just make that happen.”
The delay in release and limited platform release both point towards a level of quality that the studio wants to ensure the new game meets, Perkins said. “If we didn’t give the team more time to do it, then we would be releasing something that we weren’t happy with. We want to make sure we’re absolutely nailing it 100 percent.”
Accompanying the news of the delay, the studio tried to soften the blow — or, perhaps, make the wait even worse — with a new video teasing the “battle mode” for the Batmobile in the game. Watch it below.
Batman: Arkham Knight is now targeted for a 2015 release.
