BBC America continues to add to its sci-fi roster.
The cable network on Friday announced it has greenlit drama series The Living and the Dead, from the creators of Life on Mars.
Written by Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham, the six-episode drama series takes place in Somerset, England in 1888 and explores a land and a community on the edge of monumental change and on the hinge between ancient traditional ways and an industrial, scientific future in a land of ghosts and myths, poltergeists and demons. At the heart of the community is Nathan Appleby, a reluctant farmer obsessed with proving the existence of the afterlife.
The series is co-produced by BBC Wales and BBC America in association with Monastic Productions for BBC One. Pharoah and Graham will oversee for Monastic; BBC Wales head of drama production Faith Penhale and Katie McAleese will also exec produce the series, which will be distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide. Filming will begin in England’s West Country in 2015 and casting will begin immediately.
Said Pharoah and Graham in a joint statement: “We are as excited about this show as anything since Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes — we want it to be moving, tender, sensual … and very, very scary.”
Living and the Dead joins a roster of sci-fi programming including critical darlings Orphan Black and Doctor Who as well as In the Flesh, The Musketeers, Ripper Street and comedy Almost Royal.
