Higanjima Manga Gets 2nd Live-Action TV Series, Film

Akira Miyamoto, Ryōhei Suzuki return to series adapting Kōji Matsumoto's manga that boasts US$1.95 million budget

This year's 38th issue of Kodansha's Young Magazine is announcing on August 18 that a second live-action TV series adapting Kōji Matsumoto's Higanjima: Saigo no 47-Hiai (Nirvana Island: The Last 47 Days) manga has been green-lit. The magazine asks that fans “also look forward to a film adaptation.”

The drama will feature the return of Shunya Shiraishi (Gantz, Kaiji 2) as Akira Miyamoto and Ryōhei Suzuki (Kaiji, Gatchaman) as Atsushi Miyamoto. The series will continue where the first series left off, and such characters as the Master will make an appearance. The resistance will also be introduced. The magazine notes that an “unprecedented amount” of over two hundred million yen (about US$1,954,596) was spent on the production of the show.

The first live-action series adapting the manga premiered in Japan last year. Matsumoto ended the sequel manga that inspired the first TV series last month. The original 33-volume Higanjima manga also inspired a live-action film in 2010. Funimation released the film on home video in North America in 2011.
