ELK GROVE-
Almost two dozen firefighters from Sacramento Metro Fire District left Thursday morning for San Diego County, to help battle one of nine large wildfires burning there.
The 22 firefighters from the Sacramento area have been assigned to the Tomahawk Fire burning at Camp Pendleton. So far, the Tomahawk Fire has burned more than 6,000 acres.
Over the next few hours as the crews head south in their five fire engines, they will be studying maps, weather conditions and how they can best assist the crews there.
The firefighters making the trip south range from 30-year veterans to new recruits.
They will be in San Diego for the next two weeks.
