MODESTO-
Modesto Police are asking the public for tips as they investigate the homicide of a developmentally disabled man.
The body of 24-year-old Salvador Rodriguez was discovered on Saturday, May 17, in a field near southbound Highway 99 and Tuolumne Boulevard.
Friends and loved ones of Rodriguez spoke with FOX40 on Monday, describing him as very friendly, outgoing, defenseless and trusting. They say he had no enemies. Because of his disability, he had the mental capacity of a child.
“That’s what’s so hard to fathom,” said one relative. “The fact that somebody did take advantage of him.”
Detectives are asking anyone who may have seen Rodriquez on or around May 1st to give them a call. He frequently walked throughout the city, and volunteered at the downtown library. Family members say he sometimes chose to sleep outdoors with homeless people because he felt compassion for them.
Rodriguez had brown hair, a slender build, and sometimes carried multiple backpacks. He was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt, black pants and black high top Circa brand skate shoes.
Tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tips are also accepted via text at 274637. Texters should type “TIP704” along with their message.
Family members are in need of funeral expenses. An account has been set up at Valley First Credit Union under the name Salvador Rodriguez where people can donate toward that cause. The account number is 203912.
