When director Anthony Russo talked about superheroes “handing off” to other characters, it was taken by many as a sign that the movies might follow their comic book inspirations and replace Steve Rogers with a brand-new Captain America. According to Chris Evans, that’s not the case.
“Who’s handing off the shield? Don’t take my job from me prematurely, dude,” he asked, when the subject of another hero picking up Cap’s shield was raised during an interview with MTV. “I got a few more movies that I have to finish first, which I’m happy to do. I’m sure it’ll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I’m really happy playing the character.”

Evans also refused to be drawn on a rumor that Avengers: Age of Ultron will see the creation of an all-new team of Avengers led by Cap, joking “Yeah, that’d be great. What can I say?” before diplomatically adding, “Marvel doesn’t disappoint. You want to kinda say, whatever you’re hoping for, you’re probably gonna get.”
The second Avengers movie will lead into the third Captain America movie, he would admit. “That’s the beauty of the Marvel Universe,” he said. “It’s this giant web of plot, where everything is connected to everything else, whether it’s Thor, whether it’s Iron Man, whether it’s Avengers, everything’s kind of involved. … Every time a film is announced, there’s this surge of excitement about where they’re gonna go, and with Cap 3, we’re gonna continue that excitement.”
Avengers: Age of Ultron — which may or may not feature a second team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes — is released May 2015, with Captain America 3 following May 2016. Expect excitement, but not the type of excitement prompted by a new Cap, apparently.
