RANCHO CORDOVA-

Out with the old and in with the new.

In Rancho Cordova, crews broke ground on Folsom Lake College’s new facility.

The Los Rios Community College District and the Rancho Cordova community fought for the new location at Folsom and Paseo Drive.

Folsom College said they wanted the Rancho Cordova campus in an area where higher education opportunities are needed.

“The community is hungry for new business and opportunities and new expansion as far as residents and living go,” resident Katherine Weedman-Cox told FOX40.

With light rail just across the street, the campus will be more accessible to students.

“This is the fulfillment of a dream that has been in place for over 10 years. This is a really big day,” said Rachel Rosenthal, President of Folsom Lake College.

“I think the residents might be stimulated and thinking ‘hey I would like to go back and take some classes’. It is going to be great for everyone,” Weedman-Cox said.

School officials hope the new facility will boost the college’s current Rancho Cordova campus enrollment from 700 to 2,500 students per semester.

The 26,000 square foot campus will house more classrooms, computer labs and increase student services. The new facility will open in fall of 2015.

The first phase of construction will cost nearly $18 million. The project is being payed for through measures A and M.
