OAKLAND — Asian Health Services received a $1 million donation from Dr. Rolland Lowe and Kathryn Lowe.
The gift is funding a new clinic in Oakland’s Chinatown named after the couple.
“My wife, Kathy, and I are happy to make this gift to Asian Health Services,” Dr. Lowe said in a statement. “The gift goes toward the new clinic and will benefit many medically underserved patients in our community.”
At full capacity, the Rolland & Kathryn Lowe Medical Center serves 10,000 in a 15,000 square foot facility with 20 exam rooms.
The new center also houses a Geriatric Center of Excellence and Family Medicine Center.
A dedication ceremony and reception will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at 835 Webster Street.
Dr. Lowe is the recipient of many awards and honors, including the Chancellor’s Award for Public Service from UC San Francisco, the Silver SPUR for Lifetime Achievement Award and the Champions of Health Professions Diversity Award from the California Wellness Foundation.
The Lowes have been honored by Asian Health Services in 2013 and by Advancing Justice — Asian Law Caucus in 2014.
Kathryn Lowe was also an active civil rights leader in the community. She served as the board chair of the Chinese for Affirmative Action and Square & Circle. She also sat on the board of the Chinese Hospital Auxiliary.
Dr. Lowe has dedicated his professional life to his medical practice in San Francisco’s Chinatown serving low-income immigrants.
He is well-known for never turning away a patient for lack of funds or insurance.
