SACRAMENTO-

A Sacramento hotel has become such a hotbed of alleged criminal activity that the city has asked it to clean up its act.

The Clarion Inn, on Arden Way, must make some changes or close up, according to a letter from the City Attorney’s Office.

The letter, obtained by FOX40, outlines 167 calls to 911 in the past two years. It calls out the hotel as a public nuisance with a serious problem with drug use and sales.

Sacramento Police also confirm they’ve responded for other illegal activity like prostitution. The calls to police are coming from the hotel, and from neighbors and passers-by.

Adena Zook has lived in a nearby neighborhood and says the illegal activity is out of control.

“The drug trade is what’s the worst,” Zook said. “It’s noisy too.”

Zook, who’s lived nearby for seven years, says one time she got fed up and went to the front desk of the hotel to complain. She said the hotel told her, “Well, then don’t watch.”

The hotel admits they’ve turned a blind eye to some of the problems.

“Perhaps we could have been more attentive,” attorney Kirk Rimmer said. Rimmer represents the hotel’s owner, Kumar Sharma.

He says the owner is changing how he conducts business.

“We had a section in the back that was accepting cash. It was an extended stay. We aren’t doing that anymore,” Rimmer saod.

Kumar Sharma owns several other properties. In fact, he was praised by The Sacramento Business Journal for being a Business Leader in 2012, shortly after buying the Clarion Inn.

The city says it has tried to work with the owners before and got no response. For Zook and other residents that see the unwanted activity spilling into their neighborhood, they say if the owner doesn’t comply the city’s response should be simple.

“Shut them down,” said Zook.
