Just how dark will the apes’ behavior in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes be? A new clip from next month’s follow-up to Rise of the Planet of the Apes suggests that the answer to that question is “Actually, surprisingly dark.”
The one-and-a-half minute clip, titled “Koba’s Weapon,” shows an ape apparently playing around to entertain two humans until—well, let’s just say that things don’t end too well for the humans this time around.

What makes the scene notable—aside from the ape killing two humans, of course—is the brutality of the murders; there’s no attempt to soften the killings with catchphrases, comedy or anything to distract from what’s actually happening onscreen. If this is the level of conflict between man and ape on display in the movie, DOPOTA may end up being one of summer’s most winningly grim blockbusters.
