Firefighters rescued a dog, giving him life-saving oxygen and medical attention, while fighting a large fire in Sacramento.

Tuesday afternoon, firefighters from Sacramento Metro Fire District were called to a duplex along Luce Lane. They were told by neighbors the home where the fire started had two dogs inside.

Firefighters noticed the back bedroom engulfed in flames. While fighting the fire, they searched for the dogs.

They found one, under the kitchen table, struggling to breath. The dog was pulled outside and immediately gave him oxygen from a special pet mask. The dog was taken to a nearby veterinarian.

Within a couple of hours, the veterinarian released the dog and he is expected to make a full recovery.

“It was unbelievably gratifying to be part of saving this dog’s life. Seeing him struggling to live, and then later reunited with his loving family, was truly amazing,” Captain Jeff Hickman said. Captain Hickman found the dog and pulled him outside.

Unfortunately, the other dog did not survive the fire.

No word on what caused the home to catch fire. Firefighters were able to keep the damage to just the one side of the duplex. No one was injured.
