Here’s a riddle: When is a turtle bigger than a giant fire-breathing lizard or a huge alien robot? Answer: When it’s a teenage mutant ninja turtle.
The reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles flexed a little of that turtle power on trailer watchers last week. The debut coming attraction for the August action-comedy recorded 31.4 million YouTube views, according to technology company Zefr, which tracks the numbers.
The TMNT preview had a better first week than any other summer movie coming out in 2014. Godzilla and Transformers: Age of Extinction both opened to 26.3 million views; Amazing Spider-Man 2 did 19.7 million.
Cowabunga, Dude!
The Michael Bay-produced TMNT stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett and William Fichtner, with Johnny Knoxville, Tony Shalhoub and a pair of to-be-named actors doing the voices of the turtles. It opens on Aug. 8.
Nine of the top 10 trailers were new this week. The X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer No. 2 did 15.7 million YouTube views, just behind the first X-Men trailer’s 18.9 million-views debut and good for second place this week.
The other trailer above 10 million this week was Hercules with 12.08 million views. The drop from third to fourth was steep with The Purge: Anarchy trailer No. 1 notching 4.1 million views.
Other new trailers to make this week’s top 10 were Filth, Jupiter Ascending, Begin Again, Edge of Tomorrow and Let’s Be Cops.
The only returning trailer on the list was Amazing Spider-Man’s 2 final trailer.
