What is an unlocked phone?

An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan.

What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?

Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier.

Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card.

Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract.

How do I set up my unlocked phone?

The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination.

    Cheap & Cheerful.

    Cheap & Cheerful.
I've had the phone for 48 hours now. I'll update my review if time changes any of my opinions about this phone. At this point, I feel like this would be the perfect phone... except for the camera. The camera is pretty darn bad. Before this phone, I had the Nexus 5, which really was perfection but I'm hard on my electronics and the Nexus was the top of what I was willing to spend on a phone. After accidentally dropping that phone in a body of water, I seriously considered getting another one used but I'm glad I took a chance on the Moto G instead.I use my phone to make actual phone calls (I know, who does that?) and I've gotten a lot of positive feedback on the call quality. Everything sounds great on my end. I have yet to test it with an earpiece or headphone-with-microphone set up; I'll update when (if) I do.The phone hooks up easily and reliably with the Bluetooth in my car. It also hooks up easily with the Bluetooth in my speaker bar in my living room, which is something that wasn't reliable with my old Nexus. I'm really enjoying throwing Amazon Prime Music to my speakers when I'm hanging out at home. The Bluetooth also easily grabs info from my FitBit throughout the day.I do a lot of texting/Hangouts/Facebook messaging and everything is speedy, though Hangouts and texts aren't coming together as automatically as I would like. I also use a lot of fitness apps like MyFitnessPal, Pact, and FitBit and everything runs like butter. I love how little bloatware was loaded on the phone and I'm actually enjoying using the Assist and Alert apps that came with the phone. I haven't tried anything requiring GPS but will update when I do.The battery life is impressive! It arrive half charged and I did all my phone set up and first day abuse without charging (even updated the operating system!) and I was still left with a quarter charge by bedtime. I charged it fully overnight and I've been playing with it heavily since then, downloading apps, casting Netflix to our Chromecast, streaming music to our speakers, wifi and Bluetooth on at all times, made two hours worth of phone calls, took a ton of (bad) pictures, let curious family members fiddle with it, and 24 hours later, I still have 15% of the battery left. The one thing that stinks about the phone is the camera. I know the best camera is the one you have with you, but I think that's only true if the camera has the ability to take a focused picture. I've downloaded and played with six different camera apps so far and some have helped (A Better Camera is the best one I've found so far) but it's a lot of work to take a picture of a still life, forget capturing the antics of a puppy or a toddler.I don't mind too much as I have a very nice point-and-shoot that lives in my purse but it would be difficult to use it for the more practical pictures I want my smartphone to take (ie, the ingredients in a recipes from a cookbook, paint samples at the home improvement store, the license plate of a car, a price sticker.) Maybe the next system update will help with this. I would rank the picture quality as slightly better than the camera I had on my Razr in 2006 but below my Galaxy 2. I took a few pictures for this review and included the best one I was able to massage out of the camera. It was taken it bright diffused light with the camera balanced on a flat surface and I still had to take several shots to get an in-focus picture. I've found it to be useless with a moving subject and/or dimmer lighting.I'm thrilled with everything but the camera at this point and would heartily recommend it to anyone wanting a budget smartphone, so long as they heed my warnings about the camera!

I just "upgraded" from an LG Nexus 4 and although the Nexus 4 technically has better specs, this is flat out a better phone in nearly every way. I also purchased and returned a Moto X about a month ago and similarly, while the G is not technically as good as the X, it is a better phone in my opinion. The low price is obviously the biggest draw here, but the Moto G looks, feels, and works great! It's miles ahead of any budget phone and better than any mid ranger and may even approach some of the halo phones on the market right now.

The build quality is very high. It feels solid in hand and does not flex or bend at all. All the seams are very tight and it looks great. It's not on par with the metal finish of the HTC One or the iPhone 5s, but IMHO it's better than the Samsung Galaxy models of late and most other plastic phones.

The screen may be the best in the business right now. It's obviously a matter of opinion, but working in IT I get to setup and support many different models of smartphones. I find most IPS screens (LG, HTC) to display colors quite accurately, but look rather washed out on whites and blacks that just end up looking rather gray. I find most AMOLED screens (Samsung, Moto X) to display whites and blacks very well, but they tend to make colors look overly vivid and almost cartoonish. I don't know how Motorola did it, but the IPS screen on the Moto G seems to strike a near perfect balance with white whites, black blacks, and accurate colors. It looks really good!

Software wise, it comes with the very latest version of Android available - 4.4.3. Being carrier unlocked, it doesn't come with any bloatware - only Google and Motorola apps, which all seem to be quite useful. It doesn't come with the latest Google Now launcher (only available on Nexus phones), but it was very easy to sideload. The G performs quite fast with almost no lag that I can detect - loading apps and switching between them very quickly.

For connectivity, the LTE radio is definitely worth it! My Nexus 4 only offered HSPA and this phone is noticeably faster on the network (T-Mobile, in my case). I've also found wi-fi to be considerably faster as well. Not sure why, but at both my work and home the G is downloading apps and surfing the web and so on much faster than my Nexus 4 ever did - an unexpected benefit.

The optional colored back shells and grip shells are pretty neat and unique to the G. I bought a blue one and it's pretty fun to be able to change the look of your phone on a whim. I've even had a couple people comment and ask me what kind of phone it is. Never had that with any of the all black phones I've had in the past.

Battery life is very good. Not great, but very good. For light to moderate use it will definitely last a whole day, but I did manage to run it all the way down before dinner one day with heavy use.

As far as drawbacks, I'm not finding many. Probably the biggest is that it does not come with an AC charger - only a USB cable. I have a few extras around, so it wasn't a big deal but some folks might be surprised. Other reviewers have mentioned the camera not being very good, but the camera on my Nexus 4 wasn't very good either. I've taken several photos indoors and out with the G and they seem fine to me for a smartphone. Certainly not DSLR quality, but that's why you have a DSLR. :-) And you obviously don't get the voice commands or the active notifications found on the Moto X, which are admittedly quite useful.

Overall, I highly recommend this phone! At any price, it would be a really great phone and at this price it's a no-brainer!

When I first began shopping for a smartphone, the options were overwhelming. I wanted a smartphone that did what I needed it to do; but I also didn't want to pay the extravagant price of a flagship smartphone. While looking at what are commonly called " budget smartphones", one phone stood above all the others in this class --- the Moto G. I had high expectations for this phone, and it didn't disappoint.

      First of all, the good.

      1. The screen resolution is amazing. The Moto G's screen has 329 pixels per inch --- more than one and a half times the amount of pixels per inch for most budget smartphones. Viewing angles are also very good.
      2. The overall design of the phone is excellent. The Moto G feels sturdy in your hand, but it's far from heavy. I also enjoy the smaller screen size. I know this is very much a matter of personal preference, but for me the Moto G fits perfectly in my hand. Motorola hit a good balance between too big a screen and too small a screen.
      3. Ease of use. I have never owned an Android phone before, but the setup is very easy to learn. I have no trouble at all using the features on my phone.
      4. Price. The Moto G is approximately one third of the price for most smartphones. It's not quite as good as the more expensive smartphones, like the Galaxy S5; but not everyone can afford expensive phones. The Moto G provides the functionality of a smartphone at a reasonable price.
      5. Sound quality on the speakers is excellent.
      6. Performance on Android 4.4.4 is almost flawless. The Moto G has 1 GB of RAM, which I have found to be more than adequate.
      7. Overall value. You get a great smartphone at a great price!

      The not so good.

      1. Performance on Android 4.4.3. Until I upgraded to the next version of Android, I definitely noticed some hiccups in the performance. Once I upgraded to Android 4.4.4, performance issues were gone. Make sure you upgrade to the next version of Android or you might notice some performance issues.
      2. The camera. I knew I was only getting a 5mp camera, but to be perfectly honest it was worse than I expected. The camera is the reason why I could only give this phone a 4 star review.

I am so happy I bought this phone. I believe my opinion of the Moto G can be summed up in one sentence: one of the best budget smartphones on the market today. You will not regret buying the Moto G.

Good graphics, fast, not too big so it's easy & comfortable to hold. Well built for the economical price paid.Camera not the best. Universal model is loaded with AT & T apps that cannot be removed without rooting. Volume is adequate. Did not buy to play games or for taking pictures, so the camera is exactly what I need it for. I am happy with the purchase & would recommend it for anyone that doesn't want a camera that takes flagship pictures.
