Who won the MTV Video Music Awards, according to social media?
According to Nielsen Social, there were 12.6 million tweets in the U.S. about the annual awards show, with 5 Seconds of Summer being the most mentioned artist of the telecast, reports Twitter. The boy band was followed by best female video winner Ariana Grande, Michael Jackson Video Vanguard honoree Beyonce, double-performer Nicki Minaj, Artist to Watch winner Fifth Harmony and video of the year winner Miley Cyrus.
The moment that sparked the most tweets per minute (TPM) was Cyrus’ speech highlighting youth homelessness, triggering 138,792 TPM. Beyonce’s 16-minute medley and acceptance speech collected 97,153 TPM, and Lorde‘s best rock video win garnered 89,029 TPM.
Of the 13 million Facebook users who contributed to the 30 million-plus VMA-related interactions, the ceremony’s top moment was Beyonce’s Video Vanguard performance, followed by her award. Other notable moments: the show’s opening number with Minaj, Jessie J and Grande; Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” performance; Cyrus’ video of the year win highlighting the youth homeless epidemic; and a tie for fifth place between Usher’s performance of “She Came to Give It to You” and Lorde’s rock video win for “Royals.”
This year, the awards show was Shazamed over 500,000 times — a 46 percent increase from last year’s event. The most Shazamed songs of the night were Beyonce’s “Partition” pole dance, Maroon 5’s outdoor “Maps” performance, Jessie J, Grande and Minaj’s “Bang Bang” debut, 5 Seconds of Summer’s ballad “Amnesia” and Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora‘s “Black Widow” duet.
