Summer Thyme’s adds artistic bike rack to its restaurant

The Curious Forge will be installing a custom built bike rack in the shape of five salmon arching out of the pavement.

What do salmon and bicycles have in common? Well, if you are Amy and Chamba Cooke working with the folks at the Curious Forge, it turns out that they may have more in common that you think.

With encouragement of customer Ed Hensley, the couple, who own Summer Thyme’s Bakery & Deli, approached Liam Ellerby at the Forge with the idea of a bike rack as an art piece. After looking at several ideas, they landed on the idea of stylized salmon arching out of the pavement.

“We thought we could use the piece to raise awareness of the salmon in our watershed,” noted Amy. “And we loved the idea of working with local non-profits.”

The Curious Forge is a members-based, nonprofit organization.

The Cookes also hope that other non-profits – the Sierra Streams Institute, American Rivers, and SYRCL (South Yuba River Citizens League) – might use the rack to promote greater awareness of watershed issues.

“It seemed to us that the bike rack could make several statements – to foster bicycle use as green transportation, to raise awareness about salmon in our area, and to encourage the enjoyment of art as practical and useful,” Amy Cooke said.

Summer Thyme’s Bakery & Deli is proud of running a “green business” – they compost all their kitchen waste, recycle extensively, use all LED light bulbs and use compostable plastics in their to go containers.
