Alex Kurtzman has spoken about his plans for Venom, one of Sony’s three Amazing Spider-Man spinoffs in preparation (The others being The Sinister Six and an unnamed female superhero movie), promising that the movie will provide a “much darker” take on the Spider-Mythos.
“The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can’t do with Spider-Man,” the writer and director told MTV News at the premiere of his CBS show Scorpion, going on to say that the character “is the representation of every line that will get crossed.”
That doesn’t necessarily clarify which incarnation of the character is going to appear in the movie; while the original Venom — who first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man No. 300 back in 1988 — definitely crossed every line, he also was a villain who occasionally flirted with doing the right thing (if for the wrong reasons, more often than not). The modern Venom is, instead, a good man using the identity to do questionable things for a greater good that isn’t always clear. Both, in theory, fit Kurtzman’s description.
The idea of Venom as a darker Spider-Man also was central to the character’s appearance in Sam Raimi‘s Spider-Man 3, although that might have been lost amongst the dance sequence that made Venom into more of a “goofier Spider-Man” than any real moral threat.
Kurtzman also compared Sony’s Spider-Man franchise to Marvel Studios’ cinematic universe, saying that “Spider-Man has the benefit of having so many more movies than even some of the movies that have 2′s and 3′s in front of them from Marvel.” Although whether or not that will make it easier for the studio to launch its spinoff projects remains unclear.
Venom is reportedly set to be released at some point before The Amazing Spider-Man 3, scheduled for 2018. No firm release date has been announced.
