MTV’s Victoria Justice cyber thriller, Eye Candy, has found a new showrunner.
The network has inked a deal with Teen Wolf producer Christian Taylor to executive produce the drama ordered to series in February. The news comes after the younger-skewing network announced the project would move forward with a new cast, save for Justice and co-star Harvey Guillen, and a new pilot.
Candy, based on R.L. Stine‘s best-seller, centers on Lindy (Justice), a tech genius who, convinced by her roommate to begin online dating, starts to suspect that one of her mysterious suitors may be a deadly cyber stalker. When her friends at the cyber police uncover a potential serial killer in Manhattan, all signs point to one of Lindy’s dates. Teaming with a band of hackers, Lindy works to solve the murders while unleashing her own style of justice on the streets of New York.
According to MTV programming president Susanne Daniels, the decision to scrap the Catherine Hardwicke-helmed pilot was made, in part, to create a procedural for her network. “I’m hoping to create MTV’s version of CSI. That’s really what I want,” Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter of her goal for the series, adding: “And in the end, our pilot focused on too much backstory of the character. I can’t remember the exact storylines in the different CSI pilots, but I’m fairly confident that they didn’t linger on too much backstory. They just got to it, and that’s what I think we need to do.”
Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) will remain involved as an executive producer via his Blumhouse Productions banner, with Hardwicke, Yvonne Bernard and Beth Elise Hawk still on board as EPs. Emmy Grinwis will serve as a co-EP.
Taylor, whose previous credits include Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Lost and Six Feet Under, is repped by CAA, Magnet and Jackoway Tyerman.
