PLACER COUNTY-

The Placer County Board of Supervisors voted to declare a local emergency due to the King Fire. The wildland fire has grown to over 80,000 acres and has crossed into Placer County from El Dorado County in recent days.

But the circumstances around today’s action differs from the El Dorado County emergency declaration.

“It doesn’t mean evacuations are imminent, that’s definitely not the case,” said John McEldowney, Program Manager with the Placer County Office of Emergency Services.

Placer County is hoping the firefighters will contain the fire before it destroys homes and infrastructure like power lines and water systems in Placer County. But the emergency declaration gives them flexibility to act should things get worse.

“It empowers resources, tools, equipment, personnel as well, in case we need them,” said McEldowney.

A request will also be sent to Governor Brown to declare an emergency in Placer County. His declaration would allow the county to apply for state disaster funding and opens the door for federal aid as well.
