The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm Hardcover – October 7, 2014

4.6 out of 5 stars 325 ratings

When little Mica Mouse is scared by thunder booming outside her cozy home, Papa Mouse reaches for just the right story to comfort her. Hugging her close, he begins to read The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm. In this poetic book-within-a-book, a happy little rhinoceros is overwhelmed by a storm that sweeps away everything he loves. Swallowing the storm just makes him feel worse, so Rhino sets off on a whimsical journey toward healing. Along the way, he meets many friends, including a kind spider, a brave kangaroo, a wise tortoise, and an uplifting whale. With their help, Rhino lets go of the storm inside and learns to see the light in a world turned gray. Mica Mouse is soothed by the story and Papa’s gentle reminder that even though bad things sometimes happen, the world is full of people who care.

In his first children’s book, longtime
Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton gives us an engaging resource to help children express their feelings and navigate through difficult experiences. The “Take a Deeper Look” page at the end of the book even provides discussion questions to facilitate a healing dialogue.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2—This book-within-a-book offers a comforting message for children coping with natural disasters. Mica, a young mouse who is afraid of storms because the previous year a hurricane destroyed her home, listens to a story told by her loving father about a little rhinoceros whose home was also destroyed by a deadly storm. The tale emphasizes the strength that comes from comforting support from loved ones. Rhino has lots of friends, and each animal offers a rather lengthy message in rhyme and varying fonts. Some words may require explanation for younger readers unfamiliar with the concepts of chaos or calamity. The art is stronger than the text: colorful cartoons emphasize the contrast from the digital art of Mica's home and the brighter pen, ink, and paint pages of the rhinoceros tale. Readers may also spot the edged pages of the inner "book" and note changes in art and text for the final message shared with Mica: "You're never really alone when bad things happen." A general purchase for most libraries.—Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX

I have used this book a couple of years with a group of kids who are grieving the loss of a loved one. When I found this book I was immediately drawn to the fact that it talks about the people around us who are there to help us when we are sad, worried, anxious, etc. I read this book to the kids and then we do an activity where they trace there hand and write on it all of the people that they can go to for support. The book is wonderfully written and illustrated and I plan to keep it in my library for many years to come.

My one complaint is that it appears to be out of print now, so it is very hard to find a copy of it that isn't super expensive. If they ever republish this book, I will definitely purchase a brand new copy of it.

What a powerful story! This book is written in such a clear and thoughtful way - my five year old son understood its message when we read it together without any prompting. I love that the story has so many applications. It could be for children who experience a trauma and try to hold the experience inside; however, it could also just as easily be used to help explain how to deal with powerful emotions. I purchased the book to help my son talk about his frightening experience in the hospital. He had other things in mind though - he spoke about how he feels like he has a storm inside when he's angry. He thought about how sometimes he might hit me or stomp off to his room when he is mad, and how I can be like the helper kangaroo when I come get him after he has cooled off. Really awesome book! It is on our nightstand now, along with Trace Moroney's "When I'm Feeling..." series.

My six year old son read it my four year old daughter with some help from me. They both loved it. I love the fact they have a page at the end of the book where it takes you inside the book. There are eight different questions stated about the story. I think this is designed for parents to talk to kids and describe their feelings about certain situations by relating to the story. Haven't really come across anything like this in a long time. This encourages kids to read more books. Reading Rainbow app is great but I still like buying books. I'll definitely be buying more books by LeVar Burton!!

I bought two copies of this books for the little ones in my life when I learned LeVar developed some follow up questions with a child psychologist so families could talk more about the book's content. I have always appreciated his dedication to literacy and this added layer of care impresses me.

The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm by LeVar Burton (Author), Susan Schaefer Bernardo (Author), Courtenay Fletcher (Illustrator) is a children's book written for ages five to seven. I gave it four stars.

Mica mouse told her Papa she was frightened by the storm. She trembled under her blanket. So Papa told her a story in his soothing voice. It was a story about love, hope and good friends helping each other.

The illustrations are cleverly done and I enjoyed the rhymes. "'We're all on this earth to learn and to grow,' a wise old tortoise chimed in from below. 'Allowing yourself to start feeling your feelings is the very first step on the journey toward healing.'"

I received a complimentary kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.

Here is a great book that helps children learn about anxiety, sadness and depression and how to find your way out of them. Children learn the importance of feeling your feelings, friendships, and letting go of the bad stuff bottled up inside. I wish I’d had this book when I was a child. I give this book to anyone having a new baby.

This is a nice but.... Being that I loved Reading Rainbow and respect that author and the work he's done, this book fell a bit short for me.
While the message was a good one, I think it was a bit confusing and got lost a bit on its' delivery. I also think that it might create unneeded questioning for younger children that COULD (may not) create undue anxiety for sensitive children. I think the illustrations are wonderful and it has a powerful message but needs to be read based on a child-to-child basis. May be better for 6yrs and up.

We live in Fort McMurray, AB, and and back in May we experienced the wild fire of 2016 which left many without homes to go back to and being evacuated from our own home for 54 days. My 6 year old was having a rough time with things and a friend recommended this book and I believe it put things in to perspective for him and he was better able to express how he was feeling. I've since purchased this book for both my boys teachers and the principal at school has been recommending that all teachers at our school borrow a copy and read it to their class. It's a fabulous book if you've experienced any sort of disaster.
