The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm Hardcover – October 7, 2014
When little Mica Mouse is scared by thunder booming outside her cozy home, Papa Mouse reaches for just the right story to comfort her. Hugging her close, he begins to read The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm. In this poetic book-within-a-book, a happy little rhinoceros is overwhelmed by a storm that sweeps away everything he loves. Swallowing the storm just makes him feel worse, so Rhino sets off on a whimsical journey toward healing. Along the way, he meets many friends, including a kind spider, a brave kangaroo, a wise tortoise, and an uplifting whale. With their help, Rhino lets go of the storm inside and learns to see the light in a world turned gray. Mica Mouse is soothed by the story and Papa’s gentle reminder that even though bad things sometimes happen, the world is full of people who care.
In his first children’s book, longtime Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton gives us an engaging resource to help children express their feelings and navigate through difficult experiences. The “Take a Deeper Look” page at the end of the book even provides discussion questions to facilitate a healing dialogue.

About the authors
One of my books is in SPACE!!! (I had to lead with that - it has been such a grand adventure!) I've been writing poems and short stories since I could hold a crayon...but I never dreamed that someday one of my stories would be read aloud by an astronaut AND the First Lady!
As a former language arts teacher (BA from UCLA, MA in English Lit from Yale, teaching credentials from Pepperdine), I love playing with words and looking for ways to engage, heal and inspire kids through stories and lyrical language. To be honest...my love of words stems back from my first literary love, Dr. Seuss! The first book I read all by myself was Green Eggs and Ham - and now I write rhyming picture books! Never doubt the power of a good book.
Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs was my first children's picture book -- when I teamed up with illustrator Courtenay Fletcher, a friend whom I met in a Mommy and Me class when our kids were tots! We were both struggling with grief (I was going through a painful divorce and Courtenay had just lost a dear friend to breast cancer), and we wanted to do something to reassure our kids that love is forever, even if you are physically separated from the one you love. We indie published Sun Kisses with a Kickstarter crowdfunding drive and the help of a lot of our friends and family.
What a joy to see that our book is now bringing comfort to THOUSANDS of kids, and helping them feel more connected to people they love and miss! Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs was recently recommended by Amy Dickinson as a great book to help kids cope with divorce, in her nationally syndicated column Ask Amy! The book is being used by families, schools, Child Life professionals, hospitals, hospices, foster care organizations, prisons, deployed military families - and so many more.
Following one dream led to another: LeVar Burton saw Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs and invited us to collaborate with him on a new picture book. The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm, which I co-authored with LeVar and Courtenay illustrated, helps kids cope with traumatic events and realize there are helpers all around them. The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm was selected as part of the Storytime from Space program and is currently orbiting earth aboard the International Space Station. (I even got to go to the Kennedy Space Center when they launched the rocket that carried the Cygnus spacecraft with my book aboard - and watched breathlessly when the Cygnus attached to the Space Station.)
My latest picture book, The Big Adventures of Tiny House, was inspired by the tiny house movement and my own exploration of what makes a home (my parents moved frequently when I was a kid, so I know all about packing up and settling in again...and I am also a mom who went through the struggle of remaking home for my family after a divorce).
And...once I realized dreams DO come true, I finally worked up the courage to write "The End" on a young adult novel I worked on for 24 years! The title is INSPIRED...and the main character is a girl named Rocket who learns to follow that creative spark in her heart (sound familiar?), with the help of some inspiring Greek Muses!
In addition to writing books for kids, I'm a published poet (see The Cancer Poetry Project 2 anthology and All We Can Hold: Poems of Motherhood). I am currently working on new picture books with my amazing illustrating partner, Courtenay Fletcher (we met in a Mommy and Me class when our kids were tots!).
I am a strong believer in the magical healing powers of nature and creativity! In between daydreaming and writing sessions in my backyard purple tent, I facilitate creativity workshops and stay close to my inner flower child by dancing, raising cats and chickens, traveling to museums and exotic places in search of my next idea, sculpting, painting, tide pooling and taking nature hikes with my love, my terrier, and my sons (some of these excursions led to me create the ABC Guidebooks Explores Santa Barbara Coloring Guidebook for Kids).
I am so proud to be an indie author - and love playing a part in every aspect of the book-creation process (in my photos section, there's one of me at the INSPIRED press-check at the printer the day my books were printed on the big presses- so COOL to watch!).
Thank you for visiting my Author Page - and for checking out my books! You can see more of what I am up to on my Susan Bernardo personal website or at my Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs page (which also has some great healing art activities to accompany the book!).
xoxo
Courtenay Fletcher is a children’s book illustrator, designer, art director and daydreamer who's mission is to create books that help heal and inspire children of all ages! She grew up in California, spending summers hiking through the Siskiyou National Forest, riding horses and learning to appreciate her family’s independent spirit and gift for storytelling.
In 2010, she lost a close childhood friend to breast cancer. Her friend left behind a 5-year-old daughter, which started Courtenay thinking about the ways in which we can let our children know they’re loved, even if we are apart. It was this loss and the emotional journey toward healing that inspired Sun Kisses, Moon Hugs.
Courtenay also illustrated The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm, by LeVar Burton and Susan Schaefer Bernardo, which is a story intended to help children dealing with trauma and tough times. It was sent to the International Space Station as part of the Story Time From Space program and read aloud by astronaut Kate Rubins. Her illustrations from that book were also included in the 2015 “Writing with Pictures” exhibit at the California Center for the Arts.
Her last children's book, The Big Adventures of Tiny House was inspired by the creative and resilient spirit of the tiny house movement. It tells the story of an old farmhouse that gets recycled into a tiny house with wheels and then travels the country to discover that home isn't a place, but a feeling in your heart.
Courtenay's new picture book, The Artist Who Loved Cats: The Inspiring Tale of Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (June 2019) is a charming picture book biography of the little know artist behind the famous Le Chat Noir poster. Told by Noir, the antique store's cat, a curious little girl is whisked back to 1890's Paris and finds that you can follow your heart and change the world with your art!

- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2021I have used this book a couple of years with a group of kids who are grieving the loss of a loved one. When I found this book I was immediately drawn to the fact that it talks about the people around us who are there to help us when we are sad, worried, anxious, etc. I read this book to the kids and then we do an activity where they trace there hand and write on it all of the people that they can go to for support. The book is wonderfully written and illustrated and I plan to keep it in my library for many years to come.
My one complaint is that it appears to be out of print now, so it is very hard to find a copy of it that isn't super expensive. If they ever republish this book, I will definitely purchase a brand new copy of it.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2015What a powerful story! This book is written in such a clear and thoughtful way - my five year old son understood its message when we read it together without any prompting. I love that the story has so many applications. It could be for children who experience a trauma and try to hold the experience inside; however, it could also just as easily be used to help explain how to deal with powerful emotions. I purchased the book to help my son talk about his frightening experience in the hospital. He had other things in mind though - he spoke about how he feels like he has a storm inside when he's angry. He thought about how sometimes he might hit me or stomp off to his room when he is mad, and how I can be like the helper kangaroo when I come get him after he has cooled off. Really awesome book! It is on our nightstand now, along with Trace Moroney's "When I'm Feeling..." series.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2014Wow! What a great book. I normally don't write lot of reviews (good or bad). Probably one of the best illustrations I've seen in a book. My six year old son read it my four year old daughter with some help from me. They both loved it. I love the fact they have a page at the end of the book where it takes you inside the book. There are eight different questions stated about the story. I think this is designed for parents to talk to kids and describe their feelings about certain situations by relating to the story. Haven't really come across anything like this in a long time. This encourages kids to read more books. Reading Rainbow app is great but I still like buying books. I'll definitely be buying more books by LeVar Burton!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2024I bought two copies of this books for the little ones in my life when I learned LeVar developed some follow up questions with a child psychologist so families could talk more about the book's content. I have always appreciated his dedication to literacy and this added layer of care impresses me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2016The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm by LeVar Burton (Author), Susan Schaefer Bernardo (Author), Courtenay Fletcher (Illustrator) is a children's book written for ages five to seven. I gave it four stars.
Mica mouse told her Papa she was frightened by the storm. She trembled under her blanket. So Papa told her a story in his soothing voice. It was a story about love, hope and good friends helping each other.
The illustrations are cleverly done and I enjoyed the rhymes. "'We're all on this earth to learn and to grow,' a wise old tortoise chimed in from below. 'Allowing yourself to start feeling your feelings is the very first step on the journey toward healing.'"
I received a complimentary kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2018Here is a great book that helps children learn about anxiety, sadness and depression and how to find your way out of them. Children learn the importance of feeling your feelings, friendships, and letting go of the bad stuff bottled up inside. I wish I’d had this book when I was a child. I give this book to anyone having a new baby.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 10, 2014This is a nice but.... Being that I loved Reading Rainbow and respect that author and the work he's done, this book fell a bit short for me.
While the message was a good one, I think it was a bit confusing and got lost a bit on its' delivery. I also think that it might create unneeded questioning for younger children that COULD (may not) create undue anxiety for sensitive children. I think the illustrations are wonderful and it has a powerful message but needs to be read based on a child-to-child basis. May be better for 6yrs and up.

5.0 out of 5 stars My 6 year old was having a rough time with things and a friend recommended this book and I believe it put things in ...
We live in Fort McMurray, AB, and and back in May we experienced the wild fire of 2016 which left many without homes to go back to and being evacuated from our own home for 54 days. My 6 year old was having a rough time with things and a friend recommended this book and I believe it put things in to perspective for him and he was better able to express how he was feeling. I've since purchased this book for both my boys teachers and the principal at school has been recommending that all teachers at our school borrow a copy and read it to their class. It's a fabulous book if you've experienced any sort of disaster.
