AMADOR COUNTY-

Amador County Sheriff’s deputies say a man surrendered peacefully after a four-hour standoff Thursday evening.

Investigators say the man used a high-powered rifle to fire at his neighbors around 5 p.m. Neighbors told officers the man shot their dog, then pointed the gun at them, forcing them back inside their home.

The man, identified as Jack Souza, then opened fire on Amador County Sheriff’s deputies when they arrived at his home near Carbondale Road and Highway 16.

The man came out of his home peacefully around 9:15 p.m.

No one was injured in the shooting. Souza reportedly admitted to deputies he was trying to kill his neighbors. He is now facing charges including attempted murder and assault with a firearm on a peace officer.
