He’s been a member of the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, and now Marvel Entertainment’s friendly-neighborhood wall-crawler is going for the hat-trick with the newly-announced series Spider-Man & the X-Men, written by The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s Elliott Kalan.
The series will replace the current Wolverine & The X-Men on the schedule — events in the current Death of Wolverine mini-series making that series unlikely to continue for obvious reasons — and bring Peter Parker to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning as a guidance counselor, amongst other things.
“Before Wolverine died he made it clear he wants Spider-Man at the school, and he asked Spider-Man to go on a mission for him,” Kalan told ComicBook.com about the new series. “Unfortunately, Logan also wanted the mission kept secret from the other X-Men, so all they see is Wolverine’s crazy pal inserting himself into their business.”
Although Spider-Man & The X-Men will play on the distrust between the two parties, it isn’t the first time that Spider-Man has teamed up with the mutant super-team; the two first met in 1967’s X-Men No. 35, with subsequent pairings taking place in issues of Marvel Team-Up, Spider-Man Team-Up and Uncanny X-Men. The two franchises also shared a 1992 video game, Spider-Man and the X-Men in Arcade’s Revenge, and a clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past famously appeared as an end-credit sequence on this year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
The series, which launches in December, is the first ongoing comic series for Daily Show head writer Kalan, who has previous written humor one-shots for Marvel including Shame Itself and an issue of the series Superior Foes of Spider-Man.
