Japanese American to Start Game 7 of World Series

Jeremy GuthrieJeremy Guthrie will get the start for the Kansas City Royals and could give the city its first World Series championship since 1985.

“Whatever I bring to Game 7 will be my best,” Guthrie told MLB.com. “Hopefully it’s good enough, but if not, all the preparation, all the work has paid off thus far, and that’s what I trust, and that’s what each one of these guys in there trusts. What can we do? What can we control? Put yourself in a position to be successful and accept the results, and be grateful for the opportunity.”

Guthrie is a walking model United Nations in the clubhouse. Guthrie’s mom is Japanese American from Hawaii.  He went on a two year Mormon Mission in Spain where he learned to speak fluent Spanish. For much of the season he served as interpreter for fellow starter Yordano Ventura.

For his efforts, USA Today reports the Royals gave a gift card to popular local restaurant Jack Stack Barbecue.

He’s saving the gift card for a possible World Series Championship celebration.

“It’s a great restaurant,” Guthrie said before game 6 which was won by the Royals 10 – 0 over the San Francisco Giants. “I look forward to it. We need to win these games so I can be able to go out and enjoy it.”

Like any Major League pitcher would be, he’s excited about the possibility of pitching game 7.

“I’m no different. I’m excited for the way the series lines up,” Guthrie told the Washington Post.  It’s not always necessarily who is your best pitcher or who you have the most confidence in, but I think you go with your top guns in Games 1 and 2, which is what happens, and then it just so happens the Game 3 starter has that chance or responsibility of pitching Game 7.”

You can watch an interview with Guthrie on MLB.com.
