New Girl is plotting a May-December romance for its fourth season. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Rob Reiner will again reprise his role as Jess’ (Zooey Deschanel) father. And he’s returning with a fiancee.
That lucky lady will be played by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Kaitlin Olson. She’s booked a recurring gig on the Fox comedy as Ashley — a woman who isn’t just the future Mrs. Bob Day, she also happens to be Jess and Cece’s (Hannah Simone) high school nemesis.
The storyline will be introduced during the third episode of the upcoming season, set to air in late September. New Girl is old hat to Reiner at this point, after first being introduced as one half of Jess’ divorced parents (alongside Jamie Lee Curtis) during the sophomore season.
As for Olson, this marks her New Girl debut. In addition to her duties on the long-running Always Sunny, returning to FX in January, she’s also recurred on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
New Girl continues to host an enviable roster of guest stars. With production on the fourth season of the 20th Century Fox TV comedy recently started, Jessica Biel and Veep‘s Reid Scott have already been confirmed for the Sept. 17 season premiere. The show also just sold cable rights to MTV and TBS, where repeats will start airing in fall of 2015.
Olson is repped by CAA and Evolution Entertainment.
