It’s a good week for American Idol on the charts, with Phillip Phillips leaping up 10 points on an airplay chart and Ruben Studdard enjoying the greatest sales gain of any album on an R&B chart. But it’s not just winners of the long-running Fox series that are excelling this week — all three judges have albums or singles enjoying upward movement, making this the first judging panel in Idol history to all be experiencing Billboard chart success at the same time.
Let’s start with Harry Connick, Jr., since he performed on last week’s results show, which was sure to cause a chart impact this week. His album Every Man Should Know rocketed from 21 to 1 on Top Jazz Albums, topping this list for the first time in its 40-week run. The recording makes a similar leap on Top Traditional Jazz Albums, where it soars from 15 to 1 in its 39th week. On Top Current Albums, Every Man reenters at No. 169 to earn a seventh week on the survey. The album previously peaked at No. 33.
Connick, Jr. performed a medley of two songs on Idol, the current “One Fine Thing” and the title track of a 1999 release, “Come by Me.” The former re-enters the Jazz Digital Songs chart at No. 3, and is now in its fifth week on this list.
Seven days after Connick Jr. performed on Idol, Jennifer Lopez sang her new single, “I Luh Ya Papi,” during the results show. That performance won’t influence the charts until later this week, but the song is seeing action right now anyway. “Papi,” featuring French Montana, debuts at No. 28 on Pop Digital Songs. Sales help fuel a No. 98 debut on the Hot 100 but the single should take a dramatic jump in the next few days.
Even without an Idol performance, Keith Urban is doing very well with his latest single, “Cop Car.” The track is up 28 to 23 on the multi-genre Hot Digital Songs. On the country charts, “Cop Car” is up 6 to 4 on Hot Country Songs and 8 to 7 on Country Streaming Songs while holding at No. 3 on Country Digital Songs. The parent album Fuse travels from 15 to 13 on Top Country Albums.

For the third week in a row, a new artist sees gains on the Billboard charts after a live appearance on American Idol. Following in the footsteps of Jake Bugg and Kodaline, Mali Music is having a chart week to remember. His single “Beautiful” debuts on six charts and moves up on another.
The song is a new entry on R&B Digital Songs (No. 10), Bubbling Under the Hot 100 (No. 13), R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Songs (No. 16), Hot R&B Songs (No. 18), Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (No. 36) and Heatseekers Songs (No. 25). The song was already on the Adult R&B chart, where it advances 17 to 16.
While the judges and new artists are doing well, let’s not forget the singers who competed on Idol over the years. Phillips’ new single, “Raging Fire,” improves quite a bit, with a move of 36 to 26 on Adult Top 40. His not-to-be-forgotten “Gone, Gone, Gone” rules Adult Contemporary Recurrents for a fifth week.

Meanwhile, Studdard’s latest album, Unconditional Love, has a new burst of energy on the charts. On Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, the set surges 40 to 22, with the greatest sales gain of any album on the chart. Unconditional also rebounds on Top R&B Albums (23 to 12) and re-enters The Billboard 200 (No. 101) and Top Current Albums (No. 93).
The single from Unconditional, a remake of Donny Hathaway‘s “Love, Love, Love,” rises 27 to 25 on Adult R&B, achieving a new peak position.

Scotty McCreery‘s “See You Tonight” falls off Hot Country Songs and moves to Hot Country Songs Recurrents, where it debuts at No. 1. This is McCreery’s 12th Billboard No. 1, tying him with fellow Raleigh-born North Carolinian Clay Aiken in ninth place among the Idols with the most chart-toppers.
Lee DeWyze‘s “Blackbird Song,” featured on the March 9 episode of The Walking Dead, debuts at No. 29 on Pop Digital Songs. The song will be included on The Walking Dead AMC Original Soundtrack — Vol. 2 (Season 4), on sale this week.
Candice Glover’s single “Cried” is up 20 to 18 on Adult R&B… Also on Adult R&B, Fantasia’s single “Side Effects of You” rebounds 28 to 27… Guy Sebastian’s “Like a Drum” keeps beating faster on Hot Dance Club Play, where this week it climbs from 27 to 22… Mandisa’s Overcomer jumps back up Top Christian Albums, 23 to 12, and re-enters The Billboard 200 at No. 173. The single of the same name is up 17 to 15 on Christian Streaming Songs and maintains at No. 5 on Christian Digital Songs.
