Bill Maher ripped into Clay Aiken‘s congressional run on Real Time With Bill Maher, saying the American Idol season-two alum is “going to lose” his bid for North Carolina’s 2nd District.
Maher was especially critical of Aiken’s comments that he did not need President Barack Obama’s assistance on the campaign trail and Aiken’s assertion that he was “doing well.”
“No, you’re not,” Maher said on the HBO show. “You are gay in North Carolina. Have you looked around? Half of the state is redneck … which is a huge improvement because it used to be all redneck.”
Maher lambasted Aiken for not going after a liberal base that he “could have energized” in North Carolina, instead focusing on “this pipe dream of trying to make the Duck Dynasty types vote for a guy who had his eyebrows done.”
He compared other Democratic candidates to Aiken’s run on American Idol, summarizing that they are “happy to come in second.”
He saved his final zing for Aiken’s stance on gay marriage, specifically the candidate’s previous comments that it isn’t “an issue that is really on the radar.” Said Maher: “It affects some of them, like, I don’t know, you. And this is why Clay Aiken is definitely going to lose — he is having trouble getting the Clay Aiken vote.”
Voters go to the polls on Nov. 4.
