SAN DIEGO-

The San Diego family rescued at sea after their 1-year-old daughter became seriously ill arrived at Naval Air Station North Island Wednesday morning aboard a Navy frigate.

The USS Vandegrift pulled up to a dock at the Navy base on Coronado at about 10 a.m. On board were Eric and Charlotte Kaufman and their daughters Lyra, 1, and Cora, 3. The family got off the ship and climbed into a van. They were driven to the Navy Lodge, a hotel on the base, where they are expected to spend the night before heading to New Mexico to stay with a relative.

Shortly after arriving the hotel, the family left, possibly to have a doctor examine Lyra. The 1-year-old has been reported in stable condition since being brought aboard the Vandergrift.

Navy officials said the family does not want to talk to news media about their experience at this time.

The family was rescued about two weeks into what they hoped to be an around-the-world sailing odyssey when their sailboat lost its steering and Lyra became seriously ill.
