Roberto Orci is in talks to direct Star Trek 3.
If a deal comes together, the screenwriter will make his directorial debut with the movie, sitting in the chair previously occupied by J.J. Abrams. Abrams directed the first two installments of the rebooted sci-fi franchise made by Paramount and Skydance, but beamed out when he took directing duties on Star Wars: Episode VII.
Orci’s name has been bandied about for weeks if not several months, first as one of many vying for the job, then becoming the frontrunner. He is now in negotiations or has the offer, according to several sources.

The man is no stranger to the franchise as he was a co-writer along with ex-writing partner Alex Kurtzman as well as Damon Lindelof on the first two movies. He is also a frequent collaborator of Abrams’, who will now act as one of the producers of Trek 3.
Orci is also no stranger to blockbusters, as he and Kurtzman (the two recently split as a feature writing team, but remain tied together as producers in the TV world) have worked on the gargantuan Transformers movies, Cowboys & Aliens and Amazing Spider-Man 2, among others.
Orci is a bit of an outlier as a directing choice for Trek 3, as it’s rare that a screenwriter will make a debut with such a large movie. And it’s unclear whether he will have Abrams as a godfather on the movie since Abrams’ time will be occupied with Star Wars. (Although it must be said that Abrams is one of the town’s most accomplished multitaskers.)
Orci is reppped by CAA.
