Glee stars mourned their friend and former co-star Cory Monteith on Sunday, which marked the one-year anniversary of his passing.
Monteith was found dead July 13, 2013, at the age of 31. An autopsy revealed that the actor died of mixed drug toxicity involving “intravenous heroin use combined with the ingestion of alcohol.”
Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy took to Twitter early Sunday to write simply, “Miss you,” with a title card remembering the actor who rose to stardom as Finn Hudson, the lovable quarterback with a heart of gold on the Fox musical.

Star Lea Michele, whose Rachel Berry was Monteith’s onscreen love interest, remembered her former boyfriend with a personal photo of the actor. “We hold you in our hearts today, and every day we remember your smile. We will love you and miss you always,” she wrote.
Kevin McHale, whose Artie is one of Glee‘s original stars, remembered Monteith with a heartfelt note. “It’s been 1 whole year & it’s still so surreal, but today is just a reminder of how damn great you were and how much you mean to us all,” he wrote.
Jenna Ushkowitz, who has played Tina since season one, also remembered Monteith with a photo from the set of the entire cast. “365 days since you’ve gone and not a day passes we don’t remember your smiling face. We miss you,” she wrote.

Matthew Morrison, who as former glee club teacher Will Schuester helped influence Monteith’s Finn, is keeping the actor’s memory alive in a different way. “Happy Birthday my friend … I miss you,” he wrote, later explaining: “I personally believe Cory was reborn into some other beautiful form a year ago today. I celebrate him and his life… Wherever that may be.
Meanwhile, Murphy and the Glee producers have a new ending in mind for the series, which will conclude its six-season journey this year. “The big plan of what the series was going to be and how it was going to end was radically changed when Cory passed away. His character, Finn, was going to take over the glee club, and Rachel was going to go off on her New York adventures,” Murphy told a small group of reporters said in April. “Once Cory passed away, that part of the story as we had imagined it just didn’t make any sense anymore — and it felt bad, to be quite honest. [The writers] made a decision that the freshest thing to do would be a complete clean start, so we really accelerated all those New York stories.”
Glee‘s final 13-episode season returns midseason on Fox.
