Stan Lee got off easy in this summer’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Director James Gunn has already revealed that he had planned for the co-creator of such characters as the Hulk, Thor and Spider-Man to appear in a glass case as part of The Collector’s gallery of alien artifacts, but it turns out that his plan went far further than simply keeping Lee under glass.
During an appearance on The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, Gunn said that Lee would have been killed as part of the sequence that destroyed the Collector’s museum, with a shot making it very clear what had happened. “I said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if Stan Lee’s’ — these are the kind of ideas that I would come up with and Marvel would say ‘I think that’s super James Gunn’ — but Stan Lee’s head is rolling into frame,” Gunn said. “We didn’t do that.”
Instead, Lee eventually appeared in the finished movie chatting up a woman on an alien planet. For years, he’s seemed to be either the luckiest man on this and any other planet or entirely invincible, given the number of near-disasters he’s avoided in the many Marvel movies — and Gunn might just have explained which.
Guardians of the Galaxy is available on Blu-ray and digital download.
