National Geographic Channel is teaming with House of Cards showrunner Beau Willimon to chronicle former British paratrooper Karl Bushby‘s Walk Around the World.
The special, which does not yet have an airdate, will follow Bushby as he walks from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., as part of a record-setting 20-year, 36,000-mile walk around the world. The journey brings him to D.C. on Sept. 10, when he plans to appeal to the Russian Embassy to continue and complete his excursion around the globe.
Willimon and Jordan Tappis‘ Westward Productions will executive produce the special, which will follow Bushby as he travels along with his pack of supplies, three cameras and a trolley he calls “The Beast.”
Bushby’s journey started 16 years ago, when, with only $300, he set out to complete the longest continuous walk in history, going from the southern tip of South America and walking through Central America, North America and into Russia, completing the first documented on-foot crossing of the Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia. After trekking nearly 2,000 miles into the grueling Siberian tundra, the Russian government placed a five-year visa ban on Bushby, halting the expedition to which he has already dedicated a third of his life. Now, a year later, he’s walking from Los Angeles to the Russian Embassy in D.C. with his visa application in hand, with the hope of overturning the ban and finishing what he started.
Zach Guglin will also exec produce for Westward, with Kathleen Cromley, Kevin Mohs and Heather Moran overseeing for Nat Geo.
