SACRAMENTO-

For the first time, a member of the board that steers Sacramento’s Pioneer Home is speaking out about more than $900,000 missing from the non-profit’s accounts.

“We’re not going to stop doing ministry. We’re not going tos top caring about people who are needy. We just have to find new ways of doing it,” said Pastor Phil Konz.

The money was embezzled by Kevin Manz, according to a lawsuit filed by the nonprofit. It was money earmarked for low-income housing in Sacramento. According to the suit, Manz used it to write himself checks, and to found the now-defunct Pride Media Group in Sacramento.

“He’s done a lot of good things,” Pastor Konz said. “He’s done hard work. He’s done work in our church in the national setting, and in the California setting.”

“Along with Pastor Konz, Manz served on the board responsible for steering the Pioneer Home. That’s how he got access to the money, according to the suit.

The suit goes on to say that Manz “…exerted pressure on staff… to hire and pay his friends to perform unauthorized services and inflated rates…”

Manz was also very active in the LGBT community in Sacramento. He’s been removed from a number of boards and organizations in the community as well.

Fox40 has reached out several times to Manz for comment. He has not responded.
