Sophomore Adayja Lowery heard a rumor at Cesar Chavez High School that bullies wanted to square up for a fight after school last week. But the brawl captured on cell phone video did not take place on school grounds.
“I am supposed to feel safe at school, but I didn’t feel safe,” she said. “I contacted my mom because I was hearing that I was going to be jumped by this girl and her sister.”
A mob of kids showed up at her front door. In the video you see Adayja take the first swing. “I just got tired of it,” she said.
The 16-year-old says she has been bullied for months, but this time she decided to confront her tormentor face-to-face.
“There were so many people, like, the whole school showed up and were covering the streets.”
Adayja’s 8th grade sister Dayshuna tried to break up the street match, but eventually she says she was pulled into it. “We were trying to get them to leave. I was trying to pull her off and
her sister punched me from the side and we started fighting,” she said.
Alicia Henderson, the girls’ mother, was there for the fight; her two daughters had minor scratches and bruises, but she says she is too afraid to send them back to school, especially since the video has been shared all over social media.
“If a situation like this happens and they are at home, I’m not sending them to school,” Henderson said.
A Stockton Unified School District Officer was in their neighborhood investigating what happened, but there is fear if the district does not act fast, then something worse could happen again.
“I’m not comfortable with sending them to school,” their mother said. “They can stay at home until this issue is resolved.”
