NORTH HIGHLANDS-

Traffic jammed access to the Sacramento Metro Fire station in North Highlands as homeowners loaded up on sandbags on the eve of a major rain storm.

The station at Elkhorn Boulevard and 34th Street is in an area that is flat and subject to creek flooding.

Irvin Thornton carried sandbags to his house a half mile away in Rio Linda to place in front of two ground level doors. The house sits on two and half acres with a small creek running through the back of the property.

Thornton fears that the storm might cause the water to rise quickly. The house has just been remodeled with new hardwood floors and a sale is pending.

“It’s a $334,000 house that we just sold. We can’t have water in here right now,” said Thornton.

Many of the hordes of people who billed sandbags provided by the county didn’t live near a creek but had experienced surface flooding during last week’s rainstorm. The one expected to arrive overnight could deliver twice the amount of rain.

Other cities in the valley have also made sandbags available after weather forecasters predicted several inches of rain that will fall through Friday.
