ROSEVILLE-

Many members of law enforcement and the public participated in a funeral procession for fallen Placer County Sheriff’s Detective Michael Davis Jr.

The 42-year-old homicide investigator was killed in a shooting rampage Friday in Auburn. In an emotional interview, Placer County Sheriff Ed Bonner said the loss was personal.

“When you hear a report about this potential suspect from a Sacramento shooting, you’d run the other way, right?” Sheriff Bonner said. “Most people would. But these guys run to it. They run to the sound of gunfire, and they do what they can to confront evil to end the threat. And Mike paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Davis’ hearse was escorted by dozens of law enforcement vehicles from the Sacramento County morgue to Chapel of the Valley Cremation and Funeral Care facility in Roseville.

Along the way, members of the public waved American flags to show their appreciation.

“They never plan on going out there to work and losing their life,  but they know that is the chance they are taking everyday they put that badge on, and this time, he did,” Terri Kohnke said.

Sheriff Bonner said Davis was a dedicated and gifted investigator. But most memorably, he said he was a caring man with a golden heart.

“Sometimes when you’re at the top of the pyramid, stuff piles up on you, and Mike would always check on me, and say ‘Boss, how are you doing?’And he was just a caring guy,” Sheriff Bonner said.

Sheriff Bonner, who is also the county’s coroner, said Detective Davis’ death hit very close to home. That is when his colleagues in Sacramento County stepped in to help.

“I am the coroner of Placer County, and my guy was murdered,” he said while tearing up. “And Sacramento County graciously took that part of the investigation, and I am eternally grateful.”

The next step is for the Sheriff’s Office to find out why this incident spiraled into a rampage that killed two sheriff’s deputies.

“We will go back to work, we will put the uniform on, get in the cars, and do our job everyday. And we will do it to honor Mike and other officers that have fallen victim to evil,” Sheriff Bonner said.

The suspect Marcelo Marquez was taken into custody after authorities sprayed tear gas into a home he barricaded himself into, in Auburn. Marquez’s suspected accomplice and wife, Jannelle Monroy is also in custody.

Their first court appearance is on Tuesday.
