2014 has been a big year for Riverdale’s favorite redheaded son — unsurprisingly, considering his highly publicized death back in July. If anything, next year looks to be even bigger, with Archie Comics announcing that 2015 will mark the character’s 75th anniversary by rebooting his history and introducing a new, contemporary Archie Andrews.
Archie No. 1 will be written by Mark Waid, a veteran of DC and Marvel known for his work on the Flash, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four, and artist Fiona Staples, whose work on Image Comics’ Saga has won critical praise and countless awards over the past few years. According to Archie publisher Jon Goldwater, the series will offer “a surprising and definitive take on Archie’s origin,” bringing back “some of the bite of Archie’s original tales in a modern, forward-looking manner, while still retaining the character’s all-ages appeal.”
The new series is just part of the 75th anniversary celebrations for the publisher, which also includes a partnership with fashion designer Marc Ecko for a line of menswear and the previously announced project in development for Fox titled Riverdale. 2015 will also see the debut of a four-part storyline written by Lena Dunham, announced at the beginning of the year, as well as the launch of the company’s new superhero line, Dark Circle Comics.
The revised Archie comes on the heels of the company’s critically acclaimed Afterlife With Archie series, which placed Archie, Betty, Veronica and the other familiar Riverdale characters in a world also populated by hungry zombies, led by an undead Jughead. Archie will launch in early 2015.
