CBS is looking for its version of Emmy darling Modern Family.
The network has handed out a pilot order for Life in Pieces, a comedy from Better Off Ted alum Justin Adler and prolific producer Aaron Kaplan, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Written on spec, the single-camera comedy is the story of one family that’s told through the separate stories of its different family members. Adler will pen the script and exec produce the 20th Century Fox Television comedy alongside Kaplan and his Kapital Entertainment banner.

Adler’s credits include Samantha Who? and Less Than Perfect. He’s repped by UTA and managed by Kaplan.
For his part, Kaplan ranked atop this past development season’s overachievers, setting up more than 15 projects at various broadcast networks.
Sources tell THR that the spec market remains hot this season as several scripts are coming in late after the selling season opened slowly.
This marks CBS’ fourth comedy pilot of the season, joining its Tommy Johnagin entry and rolled half-hours The Mistake and Taxi-22.
