Jose Abreu wins the Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Today, the White Sox' Jose Abreu was named the AL Rookie of the Year by Sporting News.  He received 149 votes in the landslide victory. The next closest, Matt Shoemaker, received four votes.  Here's the votes with one little surprise, Marcus Semien.

Name Votes
Jose Abreu 149
Matt Shoemaker 4
Dellin Betances 3
Masahiro Tanaka 3
Marcus Semien 1

The award isn't a big surprise since he won the AL Rookie of the Month award in April, June, and July.  He also picked up the AL Player of the Month award in April and June.  He lead the AL in Slugging at .581, and, if you like OPS+, he led the AL at 169.  He was also in the top five for batting average, home runs, and RBIs, a first for major league rookie. He also became the fourth rookie ever to hit 30 doubles, 30 home runs, and 100 RBIs, joining Hal Trotsky, Ted Williams, and Albert Pujols.

Abreu is the first White Sox player to win the Sporting News Rookie of the Year since James Baldwin won for the top rookie pitcher in 1996.  Derek Jeter won the position player part of the award that season.
