SACRAMENTO-

Governor Jerry Brown said Thursday that he plans to sign a statewide ban on plastic bags.

During a governor’s debate between Brown and republican challenger Neel Kashkari, moderator John Myers asked if he will sign the bill.

“I probably will sign it, yes,” the governor said.

The ban, if it is signed by Brown, will go into effect on July 1, 2015. It is the country’s first statewide ban single-use plastic bags.

Kashkari said there would be “no chance” that he would sign such a bill.

The bill was approved 22-15 by the Senate on Friday.
