Jared Leto has addressed reports that he’ll play the Joker in David Ayer’s adaptation of the DC Entertainment property Suicide Squad… by avoiding the question of whether or not the rumors are true altogether.
Talking to MTV News, Leto said “You know there’s a film called Fight Club, my friends, and you know what the first rule is, don’t you?” (For those who don’t remember the 1999 movie, that’d be the rule about not talking about Fight Club. To be fair, that’s also the second rule, so you could be excused for being confused.) “Nuff said,” Leto added, staring directly into the camera.
Speaking more broadly, the actor said that he has been reading scripts and weighing up a return to acting after spending time with his band Thirty Seconds to Mars. “There was this little event called the Oscars that basically changed my life,” he said (Leto won Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Dallas Buyers Club back in March). “I’m not really in a hurry to jump into another film unless it’s something I can’t say no to. I want to make sure it’s special.”
As special as playing one of the most iconic comic book villains ever created, for example? Of course, it’s possible there’s a rule that stops you talking about that. Suicide Squad is scheduled for release in 2016.
