Memorial Day weekend was a big one for cable. In addition to Mad Men‘s midseason finale and HBO’s The Normal Heart, Lifetime unleashed its fast-tracked Flowers in the Attic sequel Petals on the Wind.
The Monday launch for the latest adaptation in V.C. Andrews‘ series of supermarket checkout novels averaged 3.4 million viewers. That’s down significantly from the 6.1 million who tuned in to the original this past January, but that comes as little surprise given how sluggish ratings were across the board on Monday night.
Among adults 18-49, Petals earned 1.5 million viewers (the same goes for adults 25-54). That marks a 37 percent drop from Flowers.
Lifetime will aim to get a little more traction out of the telepic this week, encoring Petals on Tuesday and Wednesday. The cable network is already in development on three additional Andrews books, including two in the Dollanganger series of Flowers and Petals.
