SpectreFest, which celebrates genre film and music, returns to Los Angeles for its second year beginning in September. It’s a two-month marathon of film, music, art and theater events, brought to you by SpectreVision partners Elijah Wood, Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller, in partnership with Cinefamily.
This year’s lineup, announced Thursday, features such hot titles as The Babadook, Open Windows, Drafthouse Films’ Nacho Vigalondo shorts program, Confetti of the Mind, Kevin Smith’s Tusk, Housebound, the double feature of Dead Snow and Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead, and the documentary The Creeping Garden.
The fest will open on Sept. 4 with director Adam Wingard’s The Guest, starring Dan Stevens and Ethan Embry. And the L.A. premiere of horror pic Babadook will be followed by a sleepover marathon of kinder-carnage and childhood haunts, plus a few surprises.
Clive Barker’s director’s cut of Nightbreed will have its world premiere at the fest, with a rare appearance by the writer/director, along with a special “show and tell” presentation by Barker, sharing items from his personal collection of ephemera. And cartoon impresario Jerry Beck will host an evening of specially chosen vintage cartoons for the program Spooktacular With Jerry Beck.
Gremlins also will screen in celebration of the film’s 30th anniversary, followed by a panel led by director Joe Dante and other key players on the events that led to the creation of the PG-13 rating.
Music will continue to be a prominent part of the fest, with synth master Chrome Canyon returning for a reprise of last year’s sold-out live score to the classic silent film Metropolis. Other performers include Polish composer-performer Jacaszek.
