A wildfire destroyed at least two homes Saturday and forced evacuations for all residents who lived along Dog Bar Road in Grass Valley.

“It’s unreal. You know it’s bound to happen living here. But you never realize it will actually happen to you until you see it,” Todd Atkins said.

UPDATE: Dog Bar Fire is 75% Contained

Atkins was working in West Sacramento on Saturday when he noticed a plume of smoke rising in the distance. At the same time, his family looked out the windows of their Grass Valley home and saw an orange, smokey sky.

“I didn’t know what to think. I was crying and praying that everyone’s safe. The fire looked so close to us,” Todd’s daughter said.

The Atkins family received evacuation orders, along with al other neighbors along Dog Bar Road.

Firefighters battled flames for eight hours before they reached 20 percent containment. Steep terrain, heavy timber and hot temperatures drove the fire uphill, toward several homes, destroying two.

“The winds carried it up on across Dog Bar and the majority of the fire is on the east side,” Cal Fire Battalion Chief Scott McLean said.

Cal Fire confirmed to FOX40 just before 10 p.m. that all evacuation orders had been lifted along Dog Bar Road. McLean also said the fire burned 250 acres. That was later revised down to 155 acres.

“It’s still smoking, smoldering up there,” said Atkins.
