EL DORADO COUNTY-
Hundreds of firefighters are back on the fire line early Monday morning. The King Fire has swelled to 3,900 acres. That is just larger than six square miles.
The fire, burning just north of Pollock Pines, started Saturday evening and is only 10% contained.
It was relatively small Saturday evening, only about 100 acres, then grew Sunday, forcing dozens to evacuate their homes. Cal Fire said the fire was spreading toward neighborhoods, threatening about 500 homes.
Then Monday morning, Cal Fire updated the fire size to a larger 3,900 acres. FOX40 has a photogallery showing the extent of the King Fire and the battle to contain it.
Cal Fire officials told FOX40 over the weekend the King Fire is burning in steep terrain, and there are no access roads. They are using air drops from nearby lakes.
The El Dorado County Office of Education closed all schools Monday, because of the proximity of the King Fire to at least one district.
Firefighters and the Red Cross are using some schools as staging areas for equipment and shelters.
At last check, almost 800 firefighters were battling the King Fire.
