SACRAMENTO-

A Roseville woman and a young child were killed Thursday afternoon after apparently losing control along Interstate 80.

A second child, a 10-year-old girl, was sent to the hospital with serious injuries.

“In Placer County is where we first picked up a call on this at a very high rate of speed,” CHP Officer Chad Hertzell said.

Hertzell said witnesses reported the red Nissan Pathfinder hitting speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, and weaving in and out of lanes.

One witness was an off-duty officer.

Some witnesses may have mistaken cars “keeping up” with the Pathfinder until officers could respond as some sort of pursuit. Hertzel said that isn’t the case.

“Witnesses probably thought that it was either road rage or a pursuit, but it wasn’t,” Hertzell told FOX40.

Three lanes of westbound I-80 between Madison Avenue and the Business 80 split were closed for a few hours, snarling traffic in the area.
