MAPLETON, Utah (FOX 13)-
A homework assignment sparked a firestorm of concerned parents, after the details of the assignment were posted on Facebook.
Junior high school students in Utah County, Utah were asked to take inventory of the things inside the family’s medicine cabinet, then give that list to their health teacher.
A parent was not pleased with the assignment, and wrote a note to the teacher and principal. Then posted a portion of it on her Facebook page.
“I said, ‘Although it may be a good idea for parents to do an inventory of their medicine cabinet, I believe it is inappropriate for students to counsel their parents, or report to the school what that inventory is. It is a complete invasion of privacy’,” parent Onika Nugent told FOX 13.
After dozens of comments on her initial Facebook post, Nugent responded that the school got back to her, and said the assignment about the medicine cabinet was not part of a larger curriculum, and was created by the teacher.
A spokesperson for the school district said they were unaware of the assignment, and appreciate Nugent sharing her concerns.
“Sometimes we’re blindsided, we don’t know if a teacher is giving something out that they shouldn’t be doing, ” Lana Hiskey, with Nebo School District said. “And so we absolutely want parents to come forward, let us know…. I wouldn’t be comfortable having my own children go through my medicine cabinet.”
No word what action the school took in response to these concerns.
